I spoke to an old friend who
happened to be manning that booth and she told me that their bikes are
exclusively for export. They are manufactured by 安可自行車有限公司.

Re: You Can’t Do That On a Bike

Thanks for that link. I thought I had covered Taipei show quite well...never noticed that booth at all! I wondered about the load-bearing capacities of the tubes from a frame-building POV...some cool engineering.

Re: You Can’t Do That On a Bike

I got to ride a production long john bike at the Taipei Bicycle Show and it
was really easy to ride. One of the guys at the booth did me a favor and sat
in the loading part so I could test how well it works when weighted.
Remarkably easy to ride. From what I've seen a lot of the long john bikes
are homemade gigs or really old, rather than new production bikes.

There is a big gallery of them over at
http://www.longjohn.org/galeri...

Re: You Can’t Do That On a Bike

The Big Stuff Transport photo is an interesting solution to a transportation problem. You 'normally' see a trailing solution to carrying heavy loads. Examples of this recently posted at streetsblog.net photo gallery of normal bikes from around the globe. 'Normal' is only ever relative i guess you can say, relative to what you need to get done, to the time and the place...something non-cyclists are not as tuned in to.

Re: Taipei Bike Show 2010

Thanks. I really like the bikes that are made here, the big guys
(Giant, Merida, etc) are great and all, and have made a huge impact
globally on the quality of bikes, but there is certainly more to this
market.

What I'd like to see more of now is smaller guys tapping into the
enthusiast markets where the prices of bikes and parts are
outrageously expensive.

Homegrown goodness at homegrown prices is very appealing.

Re: Panda Portraits – You, Your Bike and Your Camera

Don't mind you using my photo at all - but thanks for letting me know. Either you'd have to live in a complex with a fairly safe
shared area, a big elevator, or live on the first floor.

Then you'd still need to eject some furniture to make room for it.

I had it in mind for carrying my kids, who live in Tainan where there
is space to store it.

Re: Taipei Bike Show 2010

I also really liked that Nankon cargo bike. I'm not a biker, but I spent my first two years here running at night after I finished my classes. Mind you, I had street lights to guide me on my way, but still, it's amazing how different things look at night with all the shadows. Happy New Year, Peter, and thanks for stopping by and commenting.

Re: Cateye Cordless 2 Bike Computer

It also managed to survive when my last bike was stolen 'cause I took it off the bike.

I've had to replace the handlebar mount a few times and replaced the transmitter with one that the bike shop in Zhonghe saved for me.

Actually, guys (and gals) who put a lot of money into their bikes here often throw away pretty decent parts when upgrading. I told the guy at the bikeshop that I like to keep these old working parts, so he kept that transmitter for me.

Re: Cateye Cordless 2 Bike Computer

it's nice to see a piece of equipment that has functioned so well for so long. a real piece of quality engineering.

Re: Saddles for Long-Distance Riding

can sell you the one i have for $60.00 (it has scuff marks all over it - but
US$280 (converted amount) for a new one and $150 for second hand. But
even those are both out of my range for now. I'm gonna go to my local
shop and see if they have loaners of good seats so I can try them
before I buy. The Specialized mentioned in a previous comment on this
post sounded like a good price for me.

I have an old one - that has some tears on the sides that I can sell to you if you wanted to try out one that is fully functional and comfortable. How much were the ones at the shop in Taipei?

Re: Saddles for Long-Distance Riding

Thanks for that.

Unlike the Selle An-atomica I mentioned in the post, I've actually seen the SMP design you mentioned, at the local bike shop. I had also wondered about the comfort of it.

Woah, just checked on the price. Damn expensive. Will probably still go for the Specialized or An-Atomica, but looks like a good saddle though.

Re: Saddles for Long-Distance Riding

Myfavourite saddle is the Selle SMP Composite - http://tinyurl.com/y9lujfl
Check it out.

Re: Saddles for Long-Distance Riding

Hi Ken, thanks for the feedback.

After reading all the good stuff about the An-Atomica I am still quite convinced that it works. But if it breaks without even an accident or something I'd be quite pissed off.

I'm 89kg (196lbs) and would definitely go for the Clydesdale version, but am not sure if that really makes any difference over the regular model.

The $90 difference as well as your feedback is tipping me towards the Specialized.

Thanks again,
Peter

Re: Saddles for Long-Distance Riding

I've had two of these saddle fail. The first one was honored and replaced. The second one the guy didn't want to deal with me. Look at the Avatar in your size by Specialized. Much less $$.
